---- Microsoft Unveils New Government Cloud Offerings at Eighth Annual Public Sector CIO Summit:
Today, at the eighth annual Microsoft U.S. Public Sector
CIO Summit, Microsoft Corp. unveiled a number of new enhancements and
certifications for the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) that
continue to raise the bar in cloud security and privacy. In a keynote speech
addressing more than 300 public sector CIOs, Ron Markezich, corporate vice
president of Microsoft Online, launched an industry first a new dedicated
government cloud offering based on the BPOS. For education, Microsoft also
announced it is extending identity federation services to Microsoft Live@edu to
help schools improve collaboration and security, as well as simplify identity
management and support interoperability among disparate software applications.
The new Business Productivity Online Suite Federal is optimized to meet the
security, privacy and compliance needs of U.S. federal government agencies. In
addition, Markezich announced future capabilities and certifications that will
continue to raise the bar in cloud security and privacy, including two-factor
authentication, enhanced encryption and the expected attainment of Federal
Information Security Management Act (FISMA) certification, an important
requirement for government information technology, in the next six months.
Microsoft is the first and only cloud provider to offer this level of
protection and security for governments, said Markezich. We were able to
achieve this industry first thanks to our experience providing dedicated cloud
services for the past five years.
Markezich also announced several new customers including the City of Newark and
Florida State College at Jacksonville, one of the 10 largest U.S. universities.
In the City of Newark, we are focused on ensuring that our IT modernization and
cost-saving programs exceed the mayors overall objectives of renewing
government, said Michael Greene, CIO of the city of Newark, N.J. Thats why we
closely examined Microsofts approach, which blends cloud-based services and
on-premises software. It just made sense. We ultimately went with Microsoft
Business Productivity Online Suite its the catalyst that will allow our team
to focus on upgrading to Windows 7 and Office 2010. This model provides us
best-of-breed collaborative technologies along with the ability to comply with
federal and state regulations. Well save money, receive guaranteed uptime, and
now have the benefit of working with a trusted party to manage it with us.
Microsoft Online Services for Government
Microsoft Online Services are available for government customers of all sizes.
These versions, and the security and privacy enhancements being announced today,
include the following:
* Business Productivity Online Suite meets a wide variety of industry standards
and certifications, including International Organization for Standardization
(ISO) 27001, Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) 70 Type I and Type II, Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title 21 CFR Part 11 of the Code of Federal
Regulations, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, and Trusted
Internet Connections (TIC) compliance. Today, more than 500 state and local
governments use Microsoft Online Services in the United States, including 48 of
50 states. These range from the largest entities with tens of thousands of seats
to the smallest of municipalities.
* Business Productivity Online Suite Federal is launching today for U.S. federal
government agencies, related government contractors and others that require the
highest levels of security features and protocols. The new offering includes all
the certifications and security features of the Business Productivity Online
Suite and more. The service is housed on separate, dedicated infrastructure in
secured facilities. Physical access to those systems is limited by biometric
access controls to a small number of individuals who, in compliance with
International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), must be citizens of the United
States who have undergone rigorous background checks, including fingerprinting.
Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite will now offer unmatched
capabilities for our government customers and their unique needs, said Curt
Kolcun, vice president of Microsoft U.S. Public Sector. The enhancements were
introducing today and over the next six months raise the bar on security and
privacy. The reason that governments in 48 of the 50 U.S. states have chosen
from our Microsoft Online Services for offerings is in large part because our
offerings are built from the ground up with enterprise-grade security and
privacy in mind.
Microsoft Cloud Services for Government
Microsoft offers a spectrum of cloud computing solutions from infrastructure
to applications for organizations and individuals. Microsoft cloud services for
government are interoperable and elastic solutions that enable rapid delivery of
easy-to-use solutions in response to changing business needs while leveraging
existing IT investments and familiar applications.
At this weeks CIO Summit, several government entities cloud solutions based on
Windows Azure, Microsofts cloud services platform that provides a development,
service hosting and service management environment, will be featured. To aid
government transparency, the City of Miami created a public-facing 3-1-1
application using Azure to monitor and analyze non-emergency requests, such as
pothole repair or missed trash pickup in their area. Another unique application
of Azure, an example provided by the City of Chicago, will also be discussed.
Last summer, organizers of the Taste of Chicago, one of the largest outdoor
food and music festivals in the world, used Azure to provide interactive, online
maps that its residents and visitors used to plan visits to the event. Visitors
to the event could search by day, stage, event, and vendor and then print out a
tailored map to use as a guide at the festival.
Developing Identity Federation Services for Live@edu With the University of
Washington
Microsofts cloud services deliver a unique value for schools and universities
by providing solutions that foster simple, anywhere, anytime collaboration. In
the past six months more than 10,000 schools have signed up for Microsoft
Live@edu, Microsofts hosted e-mail, communications and collaboration solution
for students. Florida State College at Jacksonville and the University of South
Carolina are recent wins and join the thousands of other institutions in more
than 100 countries already providing Live@edu to tens of millions of students
worldwide.
The University of Washington believes federation and interoperability are key
elements to effective, seamless collaboration in complex environments, said
Terry Gray, associate vice president of Technology Strategy at the University of
Washington. We have a long-standing relationship with Microsoft, and we are
excited to work together on the development of a wide range of technologies that
will have an impact on how institutions collaborate worldwide.
As part of this relationship, the University of Washington will help provide
service configuration feedback, implementation documentation, migration guidance
and service testing on two identity federation options. First, customers with an
existing investment in Active Directory will be able to extend that platform to
the cloud with Active Directory Federated Services (ADFSv2) and enable access to
Live@edu services. Second, customers with investments in alternative identity
platforms, such as OpenLDAP, will be able to take advantage of full
SAML/Shibboleth federation support. The University of Washington will also be
one of the first institutions in the world to roll out a federated identity
solution with Microsoft on Live@edu.
---- Elizabethtown College delays printer quota payment, cuts campus costs using Print Manager Plus:
Check out the write-up in the Etownian, Elizabethtown College newspaper. The article goes over the implementation of their print management software, which happens to be Print Manager Plus.
"Gone are the days of wasteful printing at Elizabethtown College. Before the start of the 2009 fall semester, students were notified by Ron Heasley, the director of Information and Technology Services (ITS), that they would be limited with regards to the number of pages they could print."

---- Yahoo! and Microsoft to Implement Search
Alliance:
Microsoft (Nasdaq MSFT) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq YHOO) announced today that they
have received clearance for their search agreement, without restrictions, from
both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission, and will now
turn their attention to beginning the process of implementing the deal.
Implementation of the deal is expected to begin in the coming days and will
involve transitioning Yahoo!s algorithmic and paid search platforms to
Microsoft, with Yahoo! becoming the exclusive relationship sales force for both
companies premium search advertisers globally. Once the transition is
completed, the companies unified search marketplace will deliver improved
innovation for consumers, better volume and efficiency for advertisers and
better monetization opportunities for web publishers through a platform that
contains a larger pool of search queries.
This breakthrough search alliance means Yahoo! can focus even more on our own
innovative search experience, said Yahoo! Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz.
Yahoo! gets to do what we do best: combine our science and technology with
compelling content to build personally relevant online experiences for our users
and customers.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer concurred with Bartzs assessment. Although we are
just at the beginning of this process, we have reached an exciting milestone,
Ballmer said. I believe that together, Microsoft and Yahoo! will promote more
choice, better value and greater innovation to our customers as well as to
advertisers and publishers.
Consumer Search Experience
Under terms of the agreement, which was announced in late July 2009, Microsoft
will provide Yahoo! with the same search result listings available through Bing,
and Yahoo! will innovate around those listings by integrating rich Yahoo!
content, enhanced listings with conveniently organized information about key
topics, and tools to tailor the experience for Yahoo! users.
Yahoo! will focus on providing a compelling and innovative search experience
that allows people to find and explore the things, people and sites that matter
most to them. While Microsoft will provide the underlying platform, both
companies will continue to create different, compelling and evolving
experiences, competing for audience, engagement and clicks.
Transition Timeline
Yahoo! and Microsoft will work with advertisers, publishers and developers on a
customized plan designed to make the transition as efficient and seamless as
possible. Both companies will begin working closely with most partners well in
advance of their planned transition to the Microsoft platform and will
communicate important information to partners about the transition periodically
via phone, e-mail, webinars and a newly-created Web site at
www.searchalliance.com.
The companies will begin the transition of algorithmic search and have set a
goal of completing that effort in at least the United States by the end of 2010.
The companies also hope to make significant progress transitioning U.S.
advertisers and publishers prior to the 2010 holiday season, but may wait until
2011 if they determine that the transition will be more effective after the
holiday season. All global customers and partners are expected to be
transitioned by early 2012.
---- HP Boosts Quality and Value of Graphic Arts
Photo Printing:
HP today introduced two digital press solutions with capabilities that improve
photo printing quality and color consistency.
The company also announced that output for HP Indigo presses has received a
Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR) Display Permanence rating of approximately 45
years, the first of its kind for a digital press.
The new press solutions are designed for photofinishers, professional
photographers, yearbook publishers, print service providers and other graphic
arts professionals.
The HP Indigo WS6000p offers professional portrait output quality as a
high-quality, low-cost replacement to silver-halide systems.
The enhanced HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press improves color management and
consistency for high-volume printing of photo specialty products, including
photo books.
HP additionally launched a partner solution from M-photo to manage professional
lab workflow for HP Indigo presses and silver-halide output devices. HP also
announced the general availability of the ARTtrust self-certification system for
photographers and artists using HP Designjet Z Series Professional Photo
Printers.
Digital has crossed the gap between traditional and digital photofinishing in
terms of quality, productivity and consistency, and now digital printing
surpasses silver halide for photo permanence, said Christopher Morgan, senior
vice president, Graphics Solutions Business, HP. HPs solutions are
accelerating the shift to digital, creating new business opportunities for print
service providers, publishers and photographers.
Display permanence for HP Indigo prints
New print permanence research from WIR the industrys most respected authority
on digital print permanence supports the value and image permanence of HP
Indigo printing for photography applications.
The study gives pages printed with HP Indigo presses on a Kromekote paper from
Smart Papers a WIR Display Permanence Rating of approximately 45 years, which is
longer than the best-rated silver-halide photo paper, Fuji Crystal Archive. The
HP Indigo rating is also more than twice as long as the WIR Display Permanence
Rating for prints on Kodak silver-halide photo paper. The study also shows that
HP Indigo photo book prints received a WIR Album/Dark Storage Rating of greater
than 100 years.
The permanence ratings from WIR provide an important validation for the use of
HP Indigo in consumer and professional photographic markets as well as in the
fine art world, said Henry Wilhelm, co-founder, president and director of
research at Wilhelm Imaging Research. Good display permanence combined with
excellent long-term stability, as well as freedom from yellowing for images that
are in albums or are stored in other dark locations, are essential to preserving
the value of historical photographs, art works and photo books.
New HP Indigo digital press targets portrait studio market
Expected to be available in July, the HP Indigo WS6000p Digital Press brings
HPs high-quality liquid electrophotographic printing technology to the portrait
studio market. Designed to replace silver-halide output solutions, the new
roll-to-roll press includes inline lamination for professional portrait output
at a low cost.
Unlike other digital presses, the solution includes light cyan and light magenta
inks, offering photo-realistic imaging when added to the standard CMYK ink set.
A higher-volume solution for a fast-growing market segment
The launch of the new HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press for photo specialty
applications raises the level of quality and productivity for an important
market segment.
Photo specialty printing is one of HP Indigos fastest-growing segments with:
a 30 percent year-over-year increase in 2009 for new HP Indigo press placements
used in photo specialty applications; and
a 47 percent year-over-year increase in photo specialty page output for the
segments annual, holiday-driven Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 peak-production season.
Designed to meet large photo-specialty firms production needs, the enhanced
W7200 press prints 240 four-color letter-size pages per minute at volumes up to
7.5 million pages per month. It also includes new, linked color-management
utilities on both of its print engines for more accurate, consistent photo
prints. Optional finishing systems for the press allow inline cutting, offset
stacking of book blocks and lamination.
New production software from HP partner M-photo provides comprehensive workflow
management for professional photography labs using the HP Indigo W7200 and other
HP Indigo press models. The software, which also works with silver-halide output
devices, helps eliminate finishing time and reduces costs with tools to
streamline lab management, color correction and image creation.
Self certification for HP Designjet prints
ARTtrust is a simple self-certification system that enables photographers and
artists to provide individual identity to any HP Designjet Z series pigment
print produced using HP Vivera Pigment inks on compatible media or paper.
A joint development between HP and Prooftag, and endorsed by WIR, the ARTtrust
solution is accessible from a new website (www.arttrustonline.com) that allows
registered photographers and artists to activate an ARTtrust Tag, register newly
certified prints, provide information and proof of authenticity, and promote
their work. Tags and membership cards will be sold on the same website by
ARTtrust Company, a subsidiary of Prooftag.
Companies that support and promote ARTtrust include Canson INFINITY, Hahnemhle
FineArt, ILFORD Imaging and Innova Art. Early adopters of the ARTtrust system
include world-famous photographers and artists who are members of the HP Experts
& Mentors program, including Joel Meyerowitz, Thomas Hoepker, Martin Parr,
Douglas Kirkland, and Digital Atelier artists Dorothy Krause, Bonny Lhotka and
Karin Schminke.
In this age of refined mechanical reproduction, the temptation to forge
photographic works of art is easily satisfied, said Meyerowitz. We have been
hoping and waiting for a foolproof method of security and maintaining the
authenticity of our work. ARTtrust has appeared at precisely the right moment.
More information about new HP Indigo and Designjet photo solutions, which were
announced at the Dscoop5 conference and PMA tradeshow, is available in online
press kits at www.hp.com/go/dscoop5 and www.hp.com/go/pma2010, as well as
through the HP Graphic Arts Twitter feed.

Display Permanence Ratings in excess of 75 years for color images and well
beyond 200 years for black-and-white images. In addition, LUCIA EX pigment inks
exhibit excellent short-term color drift (dry-down) behavior, which is
critically important for color-managed workflows and in proofing applications.
The new LUCIA EX inks also achieved WIRs highest rating for resistance to
damage from atmospheric ozone, a particular concern in urban environments in
situations where prints might be displayed unframed and exposed to ambient
indoor air.
Simplified Workflows
Recognizing the expanding array of media options for large format printers and
to further improve the versatility of these new imagePROGRAF models, Canon has
developed a new Media Configuration Tool which allows customers to not only
utilize genuine Canon-branded media, but provides the ability to add and make
adjustments to paper settings to enhance the precision and quality of output
achieved with third-party media. Upon release of the new printer, ICC profiles
of popular media types from Intelicoat, Ilford, LexJet and Moab will be
available for download on their respective corporate Web sites.
To expand print options and improve proofing capabilities, the iPF8300, iPF6350
and iPF6300 come bundled with a new Print Plug-In for Photoshop, Digital Photo
Professional and support for Adobe Color Management Module, enabling features
such as Black Point Compensation. Through the Photoshop Plug-In, each new model
allows 16-bit RGB images edited in Photoshop to be sent directly to the
imagePROGRAF printers, preserving smooth and high gradation.
Brian Hampton, an award-winning nature photographer printing with a Canon
imagePROGRAF for the first time stated, The quality of the print is amazing. I
was particularly impressed by the iPF8300s ability to reproduce shadow details
in a way that exceeds anything Ive seen previously on the market. Its quite a
step above the competition. Hampton also noted the built-in workflow solutions
and commented, The ability to export out of Photoshop via the plug-in is
outstanding. Many of its capabilities perform as well as an RIP program without
the additional cost.
Maximize Productivity
In order to support high-volume printing and streamline workflows the Canon
iPF8300 and iPF6350 come equipped with an 80 GB high-capacity hard disk drive
(HDD) that allows for faster spooling of large files as well as the ability to
reprint jobs directly from the printer. To ensure the highest level of
productivity and reduce overall print time, all new models are also equipped
with a standard gigabit Ethernet network interface and an automatic dual-blade
cutter.
In those environments that utilize a complete workflow solution in conjunction
with CGS, EFI, Ergosoft, GMG, ONYX and other leading RIP manufacturers, updated
drivers will be available for download upon the release of the printers from
their respective Web sites.
Precision Technology
To fully capitalize on the dynamic color range of the new LUCIA EX ink set, each
new imagePROGRAF model employs two advanced one-inch print heads, each featuring
2,560 nozzles per color and outputting a super fine four picoliter (pl) droplet
at a full 2400x1200 dots-per-inch resolution (dpi) to reproduce details with
extraordinary accuracy and clarity. Paired with enhanced plug-ins and new, High
Precision Printing Modes, these new imagePROGRAF models provide an extremely
high level of photographic and proofing quality prints.
The new imagePROGRAF iPF8300, iPF6350 and iPF6300 are compliant with U.S. ENERGY
STAR energy-saving standards and RoHS compliance standards. The new Canon
imagePROGRAF iPF8300, iPF6350 and iPF6300 large format printers will be on
display at WPPI booth 401 in Las Vegas, NV from March 8-10, 2010. The
imagePROGRAF iPF8300/6350/6300 will start shipping in March for a manufacturers
suggested retail price of $5,995, $3,995 and $3,695, respectively.

NEW! - Print Manager Plus 2010 Release
Station Option Released:
Security in Printing with Cost Control and Ease of Use Solved in Print Manager
Plus 2010 Release Station Option.
Windows Integrated Software for Active Directory or Work Group Configurations
for Companies, Libraries and Schools Announced by Software Shelf.
Software Shelf today announced availability of Print Manager Plus 2010 Release
Station Option for schools, libraries, and companies who need to control user
printing and printing security whether printing through a print server or in a
work group.
This new version of the most simple and powerful software only (requires no
hardware) Release Station on the market comes with Credit Card & PayPal
integration. Users can pay for each individual job as they print or add credit
to their own account balances using Credit Card or PayPal.
Software Shelf CEO, Mr. Bill Feeley states, The Release Station has proved to
be a very popular add on for Print Manager Plus and we have been implementing
this in many Schools, Libraries, and Companies around the globe over the past 2
years. There are many ways this can be used, and here are a few of the more
popular implementations:
Secure Printing
Using the Release Station, Print Manager Plus holds jobs the users send until
they go to a Workstation or thin client panel at the printer/printers location
and type in their User Account and password to see their job or jobs to release
to the printer. Jobs not released after a specified amount of time are deleted.
This handles printing sensitive material to a printer that is not located near
the user. This also handles the stack of paper sitting at the printer at the end
of the day that no one ever came to collect. Fully supports HIPAA, Data
Protection Acts, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliancy.
Approved/Managed printing
Users send a job and receive a pop up message asking them to see the teacher to
release their job or the front desk (as in a library) to pay for their job. The
person administering uses the console to see all the details of the job,
including total cost of the job if collecting funds for it, and releases the
jobs as needed.
Account Balance Management
With the new Paid Balance feature within Print Manager Plus and Credit Card &
PayPal integration, the software is set up to put the account balance management
back on the users. They can pay for individual jobs themselves or add credit to
their account balance if they run out using the Release Station Option.
There is a 30 day evaluation version available that will work with the existing
Print Manager installation available at the link below:
http://www.softwareshelf.com/files/products.asp?type=cat&ID=146
For those not yet using Print Manager Plus, a fully functional trial version
good for 30 days can be downloaded from
http://www.softwareshelf.com
For new customers, install Print Manager Plus first, and then install the new
Print Manager Plus Release Station 2010 to gain all the powerful features of
security and ease of use of the Release Station.
The Release Station avoids the problem of users printing documents then never
going to the actual printer to pick them up. Also, security comes in as the tool
allows for confidential material in an organization to not actually be printed
at the printer for everyone to see, until the user is actually right there to
release it and pick it up.
It supports all printers on the market and is a native extension of the Windows
operating system with seamless Active Directory integration. It supports all
printer brands on the market and printing for every operating system printing
through a Windows Print Server.
Supports HIPAA, Data Protection Acts, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliancy.

Printers Audited
Printers supported by Print Manager Plus are in the hundreds. Listing them would
be lengthy and not show the actual technical quality of the product
functionality without some background data.
Print Manager Plus was created by request from the IT industry at the inception
of Microsofts Windows NT server release. Software Shelf took on the challenge of
surveying and developing a simple, and easy to use software based product, and
it did in 1998 releasing our 1.0 version of Print Manager Plus. We found that
tracking print jobs from operating systems was not as easy as we thought it
would be. The development route we took required that we audit the actual
spooled print job file that the printer hardware deciphers to actually print the
job. This required us to be able to look at separate print languages that the
printer manufactures write for their hardware. Since then we have deciphered and
audit hundreds of print languages. This allows Print Manager Plus to track the
data needed for a complete audit of all printing traffic over any size network
and any printer type.
Printers Audited includes: Dot Matrix, Inkjets, LaserJets, Multifunctional
devices, Large Format Printers, and Plotters.
